Print Material Instructions

Newspapers

Information concerning Helsingin Sanomat and Ilta-Sanomat magazine products can be found in the Magazines section.

Pre-Made Materials

Pre-made materials are PDF files that include all of the elements belonging to the ad: texts, images, graphics and fonts. In newspaper products, the area of the PDF must be the same as the ad size. Pre-made materials are not edited in the paper, but they are published as they are. Materials in all other formats require preparation.

PDF materials are delivered via the material link, the material deliverer stated in the ad booking will receive a link in his/her e-mail. Instructions for using the material link.

You may request for a link from  printtitrafiikki@sanoma.com or by calling +358 040 552 0741 .

Please note

An ad should be clearly identifiable as an ad. If the layout of the ad resembles editorial content, it should comply with our Native Advertising Guidelines

It is not allowed to share a fullpage ad between multiple advertisers.

Sanoma reserves the right to request alterations to the ad material, if deemed necessary.

Technical Specifications for Materials

Images

The optimum image resolution is 200 dpi, minimum 150 dpi when the image is 1:1 in DTP software.

The colour values of images must be configured as process colours (CMYK).

SanomaNewspaperIFRA26.icc profile is used in CMYK conversion.

Use the Intent Perceptual with Black Point Compensation. Download the profile:

In the newspaper, the dot gain of midtones in images is approximately 26% so midtones should be lightened significantly, especially in terms of black colour.

Colours

Use colours that are as pure as possible in the newspaper.

Max. 2 of the coloured inks (CMY) and black, if necessary.

The third coloured ink adds a dirty component to the image, which is why it is better to use black as well as a neutral grey to add depth to the colour.

The total amount of over-printed colours may not exceed 220%.

Text

Avoid inverted text over a background or a colour image printed using multiple colours-> the minimum font size is 12.

Place inverted text on a monochrome background.

Try to use only black in the body text. If the text is coloured, use a minimum font size of 12 and max. 2 coloured inks (CMY).

Use DTP software for creating the texts, not an image editor.

PDF

Export the PDF file from the DTP software. For instance, in Adobe InDesign, use the Sanomapaino_2018 .joboptions configuration file, which you can download below:

Do not include ICC profiles in the PDF file.

Software to use: Illustrator, InDesign, PhotoShop.

HS Visio

The materials of HS Visio comply with the technical specifications for newspapers. Please note that the printing paper of HS Visio is salmon red. If you use a white background colour in the advertisement, it will not appear white in the paper. We recommend that you avoid using light reddish undertones in advertisements, because the paper itself makes the background reddish.

HS Front Page

A HS front page ad may not have a working EAN code. The bar code may cause accidental purchases at shop checkouts. Sanoma Media Finland Oy does not filter out bar codes in materials.

Material Prepared by the Material Services

You may allow Sanoma Media Finland's Material Services to create your ad from brainstorming to production.

All materials in document format require preparation. If necessary, Material Services will produce the ads according to a manuscript provided by the advertiser.

Ad texts are to be delivered in MS Word, TXT or RTF format. In addition to the ad text, the layout and the originals of the images and logos to be used in the ad are required.

Visual elements should be delivered in EPS, TIFF or JPG format or as reflection or slide originals.

The material for an ad that requires preparation is delivered via the material link. The material deliverer given in the ad booking will receive a link in his/her e-mail so that all of the files can be uploaded at the same time.

Prior to publication, you may receive an e-mail with the proof of the prepared ad to check, if this has been agreed upon when booking the ad and if the material has been delivered according to the schedule.  Ad preparation is subject to a separate charge.

Layout instructions

STICKER, size 76 x 76 mm

The full size of the sticker with the cut line is 76 x 76 mm. All text and images must be within the inner line of the 1.5 mm cuts, so their size is 73 x 73 mm. Colour backgrounds and other elements that are meant to extend to the cut line should similarly have 1.5 mm bleeds, meaning that the printing surface should extend beyond the cut line.

Graphic requirements

MetTloStick, Adobe lllustrator™ – Macromedia® Freehand™

1. We recommend that you convert text into outlines. Or you can submit all prints and rasters as Postscript Type 1 fonts. If the document has a lot of text, we recommend that you send the fonts with it to reduce the file size.
2. Images may be in TIFF or EPS format. 300 dpi in colour images and 200 dpi in black-and-white images.
3. The PMS colours used must be included in the colour chart of spot colour work.
4. Submit all the graphics related to or supplementing the file with it.

QuarkXPress™

1. Images may be in TIFF or EPS format. 300 dpi in colour images and 200 dpi in black-and-white images.
2. The PMS colours used must be included in the colour chart of spot colour work.
3. Submit all the graphics related to or supplementing the file with it.
4. Submit all prints and rasters as Postscript Type 1 fonts. So send the fonts with the PDF files.

Adobe InDesign

1. Images may be in TIFF or EPS format. 300 dpi in colour images and 200 dpi in black-and-white images.
2. The PMS colours used must be included in the colour chart of spot colour work.
3. Submit all the graphics related to or supplementing the file with it.
4. If the plan is to print the layout using spot colours, save it in Photoshop DCS2.0 format so that the spot colour data is saved.

CorelDraw™

Save files in the CorelDRAW™ software as .ai files. Avoid sending .cdr or .eps files generated in the CorelDRAW™ software. Also submit all the supporting or embedded graphics of the .ai file.
1. Save files as Illustrator .ai files. Choose text as outline and retain the spot colours.
2. The PMS colours used must be included in the colour chart.

Fonts

Unless you convert the fonts in your document into outlines/paths, choose Postscript Type 1 fonts in the Agfa, Adobe or Bitstream font libraries. Never use the style options to bold or italicize fonts. The fonts will not be displayed correctly if you choose these options.

Requirements for font types and line heights:

The size of all positive font types must be 4 points or more. The size of negative font types must be 6 points or more. The height of all positive lines must be 1/2 points or more and the height of negative lines must be 1 point or more.

Raster percentage

3–95%. Excess rasterization may result in a full ink coverage, because the dot frequencies of printing machines vary.

Newspapers Inserts

Customer inserts distributed between Sanoma Media Finland's newspapers may be pre-made elsewhere or printed in Sanoma's own printing presses.

An insert type not printed in Sanomapaino must be pre-approved by the magazine's Product Manager / Sanomapaino. Advertorial inserts must display the word MAINOSLIITE ("ad insert") on each page.

Inserts Printed by Sanomapaino

The most common insert formats used in newspaper products are tabloid and broadsheet. In addition, the product may be cropped to multiple different sizes.

Material information >

Printing techniques

Products may be printed using the coldset and heatset technique as well as a combination of the two, hybrid.

Newspaper products typically use coldset printing. Uncoated newsprint and the fast coldset technique provide a cost-effective way to produce the most highly targeted products in terms of their print run and large mass publications.

Heatset (coated paper) is a form of offset printing where the ink is dried using hot air in a dryer, or "oven". Heatset products differ from traditional newspapers in terms of their glossy, magazine-like paper.

Insert enclosure

Due to modern finishing, the product can be varied in many different ways. For instance, an insert distributed between a daily newspaper is a handy, cost-effective way to reach the residents in a particular area.

Inserts are enclosed during mailing so the insert can be produced simultaneously with the main product or printed separately. Insert enclosure can also be divided into sections so that only the newspapers distributed to a particular area include an insert. This allows the advertiser to target messages even to a small regional target group.

Instructions for Insert Enclosure >

Finishing

Finishing refers to the stage after printing during which the product may be personified. During finishing, an address may be added to the newspaper or the insert, it may be trimmed to make it smaller or it may be packed in a suitable bundle size for delivery.

Papers

The available papers are the best options for the printing press, a combination of a competitive price, sufficient opacity and low area density. We also offer so-called improved paper quality where the paper is lighter than standard. It is also possible to use fully white paper, which is 70 g 103 light. Our papers are primarily traditional printing papers containing a mixture of mechanical pulp. Recycled pulp is included in some types of paper.

All of the newsprint that we use contains at least 80% certified fibre, often even more. Certified fibre is proof that the audited forest area is managed according to the principles of sustainable forestry. Sanoma Media Finland requires its paper suppliers to engage in responsible wood procurement and to take social aspects into consideration.

Distribution

We will deliver your message right up to the mailbox. Our service does not end with the final printed product, but we also provide a seamless logistical service together with our partners.

Ad sizes and technical specifiations

Sanomas' Magazines ad sizes and techical instructions can be found from Aikakausmediat -site (ad sizes can be found from Advertisement rates -tab).

Pre-Made Materials

Pre-made materials are PDF files that include all of the elements belonging to the ad: texts, images, graphics and fonts.

Pre-made materials are not edited in the magazine, but they are published as they are.

The size of the material must be the same as the ad size; in full-page ads, the final trimmed size. 5 mm bleeds around the edges of the ad. Crop marks must be included in the final page files. Avoid text from getting cut off by not placing text or other essential elements (e.g. logos) 5 mm closer to the trim edge.

In adhesive-bound products, you should take into account the effects of the spine on texts extending across a spread. Normally, a 6 + 6 mm bleed is large enough.

Classified ads do not require bleeds; the ad must be outlined by a frame or a background colour according to the space provided.

Material Delivery

Ad materials are delivered using ad links. Links are sent to the material deliverer's e-mail once the ad booking for the newspaper or magazine has arrived.

Magazine Inserts

Checklist for advertisers

1. Before printing the insert, the required bleeds or grind off allowances should be checked with the printing press.

2. It is a good idea to test the insert at the printing press to make sure it is suitable for mechanical handling. Product samples must always be tested.

3. Submit 5 pcs of sample inserts. The sample/dummy should be sent to the printing press for technical/production inspection. If the sample/dummy is not sent for inspection according to the schedule and the insert causes technical problems or issues in production, any incurred costs shall be charged or the insert may be left out of the publication.

4. Provide clear packing instructions for inserts (to your subcontractor) to make sure they arrive at the printing press in appropriate condition. Also, make sure that they are packed systematically so that they can be handled mechanically. The consignment should clearly state the intended magazine or newspaper, the name of the insert, the codes, quantities and other information as well as the reservation number of the printing press.

5. Submit the inserts well in advance, at least three weeks before the publication date of the issue.

6. Leftover inserts are disposed of after the binding process, unless otherwise agreed upon. The recipient shall cover the transport costs of any returns.

Testing

The suitability of inserts and product samples for mechanical production must always be confirmed with the printing press. It is a good idea to test the inserts in advance. This testing is especially necessary for thick inserts, letter fold inserts, inserts with a size restriction and all sample products/goods.

All inserts/sample goods must be submitted for pre-approval. If testing is done, at least 200 inserts are required.

Instructions for packing inserts

Inserts are packed in loose bundles that are as big as possible, with turns that are as large as possible, or ideally without any turns. Do not use straps, plastic or rubber bands to tie the bundles.

Stack the inserts onto pallets so that they do not overhang the edge of the pallet; the outer edges of the bundles should not become twisted. The edges and corners should be even on every layer, and any excess space should be left inside the pallet.

Small inserts that are difficult to stack onto pallets should be packed into boxes. However, please remember to pack them systematically so that they face the same way in all boxes.

Add clear markings in both the delivery note or dispatch and the pallet.

We charge for the separate handling of poorly packed inserts or inserts damaged in transit and for any costs incurred due to a decrease in production efficiency.

We give notice of the separate handling of poorly packed inserts or inserts damaged in transit and any decrease in production efficiency as soon as we detect a problem.

Tips for Creating an Ad

Size

Try to design the ad so that its content corresponds to its size. Use good images and a font size that is visible enough. Do not include too much text and images in the ad. Consider what you are advertising and what kind of message you wish to convey. Avoid a monotonous appearance - highlight the parts (brand / low prices / special products / location / contact details etc.) that you hope readers will remember.

Colours

Always use the CMYK colour system in newspaper ads. Choose the colours carefully and control the use of colour. Remember that a colour on screen may look different once it has been printed. Take the spreading of colour on paper and colour alignment into consideration. Minimise the use of process colours when choosing colours; you can find suitable colours also by combining two process colours. Try to only use black ink in the black colour. This will guarantee a high-quality, successful end result.

The abbreviation CMYK refers to the four inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black). When all of the colours are applied at the same time, the result is a deep black colour with 400% ink coverage. The maximum ink coverage in a newspaper is 220%, and for a deep black you should use 15% C, 100% K. If you use more coloured inks, the black may appear dirty.

Images

Choose images with care. Use high-quality images with a sufficient quality and size for printing. Use an image editor to resize the images while keeping the aspect ratio, so that the proportions remain right. Do not use images that are too detailed in small ads, because the details will not stand out properly. Consider whether a horizontal or a vertical image is better for the ad. Do not forget copyright; you must have permission to publish the image. CMYK is the colour system used in printing; the colours are created by combining four inks.

Technical specifications for an image:
Image resolution at least 150 dpi, the optimum is 200 dpi
CMYK colour system and WAN-IFRA26v5.icc (download at www.sanomapaino.fi)
Maximum ink coverage 220%

Texts

Text is a crucial part of the ad. Consider the font size, colour and readability already when designing the ad. Try to use text that has been printed using one ink, preferably black, as much as possible. Place inverted text on a monochrome background; when placing on top of a coloured image, increase the font size to at least 12 points.

Use DTP software to create the texts, not an image editor.

Consider the text layout and the sections that you wish to highlight. You can focus readers' attention on individual words or sections by bolding or italicising. Avoid the use of too many fonts in the same ad; instead, try to use different variations and sizes of one or two fonts.

Inverted text is often white. Use inverted text sparingly and make it large enough so that the result is easily readable. If you use coloured text on a coloured background, make sure that the text stands out clearly. The recommended minimum size for inverted text is 12 points or larger, and the text should preferably be bolded.
