Dynamic advertising material instructions

For a DCO (dynamic creative optimization) ad, we need the following materials:

  • feed
  • DCO script
  • material needed for the ad template (e.g., background images, logos, font files)

DCO script

We ask you to send a completed DCO manuscript with your DCO material. This manuscript should include information about how the ad should work, what the feed shows, which DCO ad template is used and what elements are displayed in the ad.

Download DCO-script

Dynamic retargeting

For a DCO retargeting campaign, the client must install tracking tags on its site. These tags will “stamp” visitors to the site, enabling the display of retargeted advertising to stamped visitors on Sanoma websites.

Before installing the retargeting tags, the client must submit a retargeting scenario with the rest of the campaign material, i.e., what DCO ad content the visitor will be shown, and in what way, on the basis of a visit to the site. For example, if the visitor has viewed a certain pair of trainers in an online shop, they will be shown these trainers in the Sanoma network, as well as products of the same category or brand.

Sanoma will provide the client with retargeting tags and more detailed instructions. When the tags are installed, we will check that visitor numbers are accruing and that the campaign may be begun.

Feed instructions

Product feed instructions

You can create a product catalogue from a variety of different data sources. For the feed, different columns are needed depending on the inventory type and on the desired purpose of the catalogue. For example, a product feed contains different data to a hotel feed. This document covers the creation of a basic product feed and how it is used in dynamic advertising.

We accept Facebook and Google product feeds, but for banner marketing it’s a good idea to take note of the text space and character count limitations.

Supported file formats

A product feed may be in one of the following formats: CSV, ATOM XML, RSS 2.0 XML. The file must be UTF-8 encoded.

You can send us your product feed as a URL, which our system will retrieve it from once when the campaign begins, or it can be updated from the URL to our system hourly or daily. You can also send the feed to as a file. In that case, it cannot be updated.

CSV

UTF-8 encoded, comma-separated.

  • This is compatible with almost all spreadsheet programs. You can create a CSV file in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, for example.

  • The first row is a heading row where you enter the mandatory and optional column headings. You then enter product data in the rows below.

  • Note that in a CSV file, fields which contain spaces or commas must be put in quotation marks, such as: “cotton T-shirt”.
If a field in quotation marks contains quotation marks, then consecutive quotation marks need to be used. For example: “The logo ““ABC”” is printed on the T-shirt.”
Most spreadsheet programs do these things automatically, but it’s worth knowing the requirements.

CSV example:

id,title,image_link,link,price,sale_price,description,product_type,brand,availability
ABC_001,"Merino wool sweater”,
https://sanoma.com/neule001.jpg,https://sanoma.com/neule001/,“€109.00”,”€80.00”,”Fabulous warm merino wool sweater, 100% non-mulesed merino wool”, “Clothes > Tops > Sweaters”,”Sweater Factory”,”in stock”

Google Sheets spreadsheet

CSV from Google Sheets spreadsheet

XML (RSS/ATOM)

This file format is used in coding editors (such as ATOM) and in basic text editors. Automated feed service systems and web servers typically create this format. It uses different markers to include each product in your inventory. The data entry file must start with a <?xml configuration tag and be UTF-8 encoded. We only support XML files with the g: prefix, such as "g: id", "g: title", "g: price", "g: link", "g: image_link".

Product feed checklist and recommendations for product images

Go through the following checklist before sending us material and a product catalogue:

  • Make sure that the product catalogue contains data in the compulsory columns id, title, price, link and image_link.
  • Make sure that all feed URLs (link and image_link) use the https:// protocol (SSL).
  • Make sure that the product name (title) is descriptive and short enough for all of it to fit in the ad.
  • Make sure that the price columns are in the right format. For example:  15.00 EUR
  • Using product_type is recommended. It makes it easier to administer and choose products when creating an ad. Make sure the category tree has enough levels and that the sub-categories are separated by >.
    E.g.: Clothes > Tops > Sweaters
Category information is also important in re-targeting campaigns if you want to show the visitor other products from the same category, for example.
  • If the product has a description you intend to use in an ad, make sure that it’s short and descriptive.

Recommendations for product images

  • In image_link, you must use the https:// protocol (SSL).
  • Image resolution and file size must be optimized for banner ads and not too large. The maximum size is 600x600px. Images do not need to be square. They will be scaled to the ad area.
  • Supported file formats: jpg and png
  • Note that images must be in a location that can withstand the traffic coming from the banners.
  • The image background must be white or transparent.
  • Use product images that show the entire product from close up. The image must be of the product and it must match the product name and description.
  • Do not use text in product images! For example, do not use CTA promocodes, watermarks or time-critical information (such as a limited offer).
  • Max image weight 100kb

Creating a product feed in Google Sheets

If no feed solution is available, you can also create a product catalogue in Google Sheets, for example, from where a CSV feed can be published. In that case, the feed will be sent to use as a Google Sheets CSV URL. See more detailed instructions below.

Below are details of the columns needed in a product catalogue, with descriptions and sample content.
In a product catalogue, the column headings must be written exactly as below.

Column heading

Description

Example

Image link structure for images hosted on Google Drive

When fetching images to Google Sheet from Google Drive, the URL structure needs to be edited in order to use the image for dynamic advertising. The default image sharing settings allow you to view images in the browser, but not download them. If the links to the images are in the default format, they will not load nor appear in the ad. To solve the issue, edit the URL structure of the image links as follows:

Change the URL structure from this https://drive.google.com/file/d/FILE_ID/edit?usp=sharing

To this https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=FILE_ID

This image link in the latter format is then placed in the column named image_link on the sheet. FILE_ID in the URL is a unique string of numbers and letters. To test the success of the change, click the customised URL. The change is successful if your browser starts to download the file.

NB! About product images:

  • In image_link, you must use the https:// protocol (SSL).
  • The images must be in a location that can withstand the traffic coming from the banners. If this cannot be done, just enter the image file name in the image_link field and send us the images as files with the rest of the material.
  • Product image resolution and file size must be optimized for banner ads and not too large. The maximum size is 600x600px. Images do not need to be square. They will be scaled to the ad area.
  • Supported file formats: jpg and png
  • The image background must be white or transparent.
  • Use product images that show the entire product from close up. The image must be of the product and it must match the product name and description.
  • Do not use text in product images! For example, do not use CTA promocodes, watermarks or time-critical information (such as a limited offer).

Creating a CSV URL in Google Sheets

Create a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets with the columns described above and data on six products.

dynaaminen mainonta tuotepalkki-tuoteluettelo

Add all the products you need and add the product information to the sheet.
Remember to fill in all the compulsory columns: id, title, image_link, link, price
When the catalogue is published, publish it:

dynaaminen mainonta tuotepalkki-tuoteluettelo2

Choose the spreadsheet and choose .csv as the publication type.
Recommended: If you want to keep the product catalogue up-to-date when you make changes, tick “Automatically republish when changes are made” (only works when the image files also come from a URL).
Click “Publish” and copy the URL. Send us this URL along with the rest of the material.

Other feed formats and integrated feeds

Feeds that are different to product feeds, such as hotel, flight, travel destination, accommodation and car feeds are, as a rule, always integrated. The columns in these feeds are also different to product feeds.

Integrated feeds can be more tailored and complex than basic product feeds, and we approve more file formats for them.
However, apart from feed columns and file format, the same rules apply to integrated feeds as to basic product feeds:

  • all feed URLs use the https:// protocol (SSL)
  • images conform to recommendations (see product feed checklist above)
  • Fields with text are short and descriptive

With an integrated feed, you must check that the input limit and transfer limit are reasonable so the items can be retrieved from the feed. And, if possible, it is best to be able to search for all products at once, but at least 5,000 products per request.

Dynamic advertising tracking to adservers and web analytics systems

Ad impressions and clicks from Sanoma's DCO campaigns can be tracked to adservers (Adform & Google Campaign Manager). In addition, campaign traffic can be tracked to web analytics systems using utm parameters. The desired tracking should be provided in the “Ad Tracking and behaviour” section of the DCO script.

Impression and click tracking to 3rd party adservers

It is possible to track ad impressions with 1x1 impression pixels in to track campaign level impressions. If your campaign contains multiple formats, you can set separate tracking pixels for them to track impressions at the ad format level. Submit a tracking pixel to the DCO script filled in the Impression pixel field on the tabs of the format used in the campaign.

Clicks to Adform and Google's ad management systems can be tracked using click trackers. Trackers are set at the format level, where clicks register for them, but the ad redirects to the address of the product currently displayed in the ad, which is dynamically retrieved from the feed.

When using Adform, provide a standard click tracker ending in a bn number in the Click Tracking for feed items field of the DCO script. When using Google Campaign Manager, click tracking should be in the form of static click tracker. Note that tracking ad and dynamic click tracker do not work.

In the dynamic full page with carousel ad format, it's possible to use an image or video at the top of the banner as a separate click area. This image or video remains the same regardless of the product shown below, and can have its own click tracker. This field is filled with the standard Adform or Google click counter. If a separate click area is not used, the entire banner will be redirected to the landing page of the currently visible product, which will be retrieved from the feed. The top click counter is filled in the Upper part photo / video linksection of the DCO script.

Tracking to web analytics systems

Campaigns can be tracked directly to Google Analytics using utm parameters. The same parameters can also be used with other web analytics systems if they are configured to use utm parameters. It is possible to track traffic from the campaign in an aggregated way at the campaign level. If your campaign contains multiple formats, you can set different utm parameters for them, allowing you to track your campaign at the ad format level.

Submit the desired utm parameters to the DCO script, filled in the section Ad Tracking and behaviour” on the tabs of the format used in the campaign. In this case, traffic is accumulated at the campaign or format level in the web analytics system.

Dynamic UTM Macros

When it comes to obtaining UTM information, such as what type of object was clicked in the ad (e.g. “<Title>”) or the Product identification itself of the product clicked in the ad (i.e. “<id>”) you’ll need to type a relevant macro into for the UTM field of your choice, surrounded by angle brackets.

“<Title>” and  “<id>” are column names in your catalog, therefore the value you insert in the UTM field, is basically the name of the column in the out-feed to the ad. Below are the most widely used macros, but you can also use other ones,  such as “<category>”:

[id] - This inserts the object’s id into the string, e.g. you can insert a utm value like this 'Product_<id>'

[title] - This inserts the title/name  of the object into the string e.g. you can insert a utm value like this ‘Product_<title>'

Please deliver the desired UTM macros in the DCO script along with other campaign information.

Dynamic half page is 300x600px and it can display six different products at a time. This ad format needs a product catalogue to work.
